Pittsburgh Steelers News History

The Steelers were founded as the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 8, 1933 by Art Rooney. The ownership of the Steelers has remained within the Rooney family since its founding.

The current owner is Art's son, Dan Rooney, who has given control of the franchise to his son Art Rooney II.

Early 1940, Art Rooney decided that he wanted to change the name from the copycat Pirates tradition. He worked with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to run  a contest to find a new name for the team

The former coach Joe Bach led the panel to select the name of the Steelers. The new name paid homage to the city's largest industry which was steel.

There were a total of 21 winners and each winner received a pair of season tickets to the upcoming season, a prize which was worth $5 ($85 today).

The Steelers colors are black and gold since the team inception. In 1962, the team logo is based on the flag originally designed by Pittsburgh U.S. Steel and now owned by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Robert Sexton, an employee of the Pittsburgh office of Cleveland-based Republic Steel, suggested that the Steelers adopt the industry logo.

The logo only had the word "Steel and the team was given permission to add "ers" in 1963 after a petition was file against the AISI. The colors in the logo represent yellow for coal, orange for iron, and blue for
scrap iron, something I did not know.
