Denver Broncos Rumors History

Bob Howsam, was denied an NFL Franchise  under the leadership of Chicago Bears owner George Halas. After being denied, Howsam and four others decided to start a team in the AFL a rival league to the NFL.

The new league, the AFL announced its formation on playing August 14, 1959, with Denver as a charter member. A contest to name the team was started and "Broncos was chosen as the new name.

The Broncos won the first-ever AFL game over the Boston Patriots 13–10, on September 9, 1960. On August 5, 1967, they became the first-ever AFL team to defeat an NFL team, with a 13–7 win over the Detroit Lions in a preseason game.

However, the Broncos were not successful during the 1960s, compiling a losing record of 39–97–4.

As an original 10 team member the Denver Broncos never had a winning record and never played in a title game during the league's 10 year history.

Denver were close to losing its franchise in 1965, before local ownership group took control and rebuilt the team. Floyd Little the team's first superstar was instrumental in keeping the team in Denver, due to his signing in 1967 making the Pro Bowl and his efforts on and off the field.

The Broncos were also the first American professional football team to have an African-American quarterback of the modern era, Marlin Briscoe, the first to have a receiver, Lionel Taylor with 100 receptions in a season and the first starting African-American placekicker, Gene Mingo.
